What a week! It seems the crabs are now in full swing and we've seen plenty of fish in on the back of them. There have been excellent reports right around the region with lots of bass between 2-3lb and a fair few up to 6lb. It's a cracking time of the year to be out and about and mixed bags can be expected, there have been hounds to 5lb along with dogfish, a few rays and still some codling in the south.
It's the north and East that really hit the heights though. Lots and lots of bass and smoothounds, I saw some fine catches from Karl Gibson and Rob Allen, with several hands and a few bass, even the did dogfish managed a look in. Holt SAC and Sabre Tackle fished their latest natch at Kelling. Old mate Chris Bulch won the match with double figures including a cracking flounder of 1lb 5oz. Mark Borley was 3lb back in second with 7lb 4oz, and Nigel Spencer was third with 5lb 1oz. 10 bass showed in a total match catch if over 56lb, great sport for those competing. I think we have another couple of weeks until things settle Finn and with good conditions we could be in for some bumper sport!
EDP report 22/04/15
Sport is certainly better the further south you go, there have been some lovely spring codling showing from the Essex beaches up through into Suffolk, particularly on the deep water stretches at Orford and Aldeburgh. Christian Bulch of Sabre Tackle had three lovely rays from the beach at St Osyth and boat anglers are having a good time of things too with some nice rays amongst the codling and dogfish. It's a little slower up into Norfolk though there are some bass starting to show and the initial crab moult is now underway, which will bring in more fish. There have been a few codling and even the occasional ray from the east Norfolk beaches and up on to the shingle. Things will definitely improve over the next two weeks and we may even see some proper hounds when the crabs get going properly.
