EDP report 25/02/15

A little quieter this week, though there are still a few showing, particularly on the Suffolk beaches. Even further south into Essex and there seem to be lots, with plenty of fish showing at Holland on Sea, the pier at Walton on the Naze. The fish seem to be feeding on hardback crabs, which again bodes well for a few decent fish in the spring when those crabs start to moult. Closer to home and Holt SAC and Sabre Tackle fished the latest round of their winter league series at Bacton. Christian Bulch snared an elusive codling which helped him to top spot with 2lb 11oz. Ian Gedney also had a solitary codling for 2lb 9oz and second while John Carter had a school bass for 1lb 7oz. I’m seeing more school bass in the reports and it should only be a matter of time now before we start to see some better ones.

In the south of the patch there have been some good returns at Corton, Lowestoft north beach, Pakefield and Kessingland. Aldeburgh and Orford have produced a few too, I haven’t seen reports for Southwold, Dunwich, Minsmere and the other Suffolk spots, but I would imagine there will be a few on those beaches too when conditions are right. There’s a lot of west in the wind forecast for this week which will keep the sea flat around the region, there’s a chance of some northwest towards the weekend which should help the shingle and eastern beaches, a bit of colour in the south should be helped as the wind gets some southwest too. Even chances this week I think, those with some early peeler might well find that a significant advantage.

Into the second week of February and it seems that the do,drums have kicked in. Boats are struggling, we've seen some super, rolling, and coloured seas yet anglers have struggled to catch. I've seen reports of good anglers blanking in the spots where you can usually rely on one or wo pitching up. The only highlight I think has been the quality of some of the dabs from off the sandy beaches. Some good ones have come from the sandy East Norfolk beaches and as far south as Sizewell.

Holt SAC fished at Kelling in the latest round of the sea league. A real struggle for some of the regions top match men, Tony Thomas taking the honours with 1lb 9oz. My old mate Digger Fairclough was an ounce off in second with Mike Watts third with 1lb 3oz. Teams on the day saw Avenue Angling and North Norfolk Lads tied for top spot with Sabre Tackle B in third, interestingly no round fish were caught in the match, I've been predicting rockling in catches for the past couple of weeks, it seems not even the rockling want to feed at the minute. I'm confident things will improve as we roll into March and think some of those codling will still be around when we're targeting the bass, high hopes for a spring run to remember.

EDP report 04/02/15

The weather played its part over the last week, with all but the hardiest preferring the warmth of indoors to the Baltic feel of our beaches. Those hardy souls that did venture out were not really rewarded, as is often the case with East in the wind, seas looked good but only really produced a few flounders and rockling.

The week ahead looks a little better wind wise though I think the temperatures may keep anglers off the beaches, the best chances of decent fish will be in the spots where they often hang out, look out for a bit of northwest and the rough ground under the cliffs at Weybourne, that same wind should help keep a bit of colour along the Corton to Lowestoft north stretch.
